Noblit was a French Huguenot who left Ireland with Quaker emigrants to settle in
Pennsylvania. He first appeared on the tax rolls as a resident citizen of Newton Township,
Chester County Pennsylvania during the tax year of 1729. He and Ann Brereton were married
in York County, Pa. on January 18th, 1737. John came to America with his three brothers
Richard, Francis and William.
He was married to Ann BRERETON (daughter of Henry BRERETON) on January 18, 1737 in York Co.,
PA. Ann BRERETON was born about 1699. She died in 1785. John NOBLET and Ann BRERETON had

John Noblit was a Quaker and the first John Noblit to be born in the United States. He was
however the sixth child born to John and Ann Noblit. In March of 1766 John and Rebecca moved
from York County Pa. to Chatham Co., North Carolina, joined the Society of Friends in Orange
Co. now Alamance Co.)
He was married to Rebecca KEYS (daughter of Joseph KEYS and Rebecca MULLINS) in 1765 in York

Orphans' Court from 1761 until 1763.

21. William NOBLET was born on August 6, 1776 in Chatham Co. North Carolina. He died in
1840. He and Polly Vandeveer were married in Orange County, North Carolina in 1799. In
1814 the three sons of John and Rebecca Noblit (Joseph, William and Abraham) left North
Carolina probably following the trail through Cumberland Gap, over the wilderness raod
blazed by Daniel Boone.
Abraham married and took up residence in Henry County, Kentucky while William and Joseph
continued on to Indiana. William is first recorded in the Indiana voting records for 1816.
William became a Primitave Baptist and was an organizer of Baptist Churches in Southern
Indiana.
He was married to Polly VANDEVEER (daughter of Sr John VANDEVEER and Amelia SPEER) in 1799.

big flood that took many lives. Abraham is buried in some small country graveyard in

She was married to Herschel LeRoy WHITE (son of Irven LeRoy WHITE and Ida Mae WEEKLY)
on April 21, 1928 in Columbus, Indiana. The second child born to Herschel and Maryann,
Mildred Lynn was carried to term but only lived three days. There were two more
children born sometime between Betty Ann and Jerry LeRoy, they were identical twins
born premature and died at birth. They were neither named or buried. Herschel LeRoy
WHITE was born on January 9, 1910 in Columbus, Indiana. He died on December 12, 1976
in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was buried in Washington Park Cemetary; Indpls, Ind..
He had Social Security Number 304-07-4923. Herschel detested his given name and went
by the initials of "H. L." or the nick name of "Whitey" for most of his adult life.
Most of his friends and business associates never knew his real name. He worked in sales
since he was a small boy, however, his first experience in sales was not a good one.
His father, Irven, sold Bibles door to door and often went from Columbus to the
smaller surrounding towns and spent the day selling house to house. Herschel decided
at 14, at the end of his sixth grade that he was ready to quit school and join his
father in business. Irven gave him a sample kit, took him to Seymour, Indiana and said,
"Knock on every door, sell 'em a Bible and I'll pick you up in time to return home for
supper". At 4:00pm Irven went to the designated spot and no Herschel, Irven drove all
over town and still no Herschel. Irven contacted the Seymour police and they searched
but were unable to locate him. Irven went back home to see if Herschel had contacted his
mother Ida, and there he was, sitting under a tree drinking lemonade in the shade. He
had knocked on two doors and when they turned him down he walked the 17 miles back home
to Columbus and decided this was not his cup of tea. No record was made of Irven's
reaction but he must have given him another chance and it must have worked out better.
Herschel never returned to school and he worked his way to top salesman in every field
he entered from that time on. He sold Bibles until the depression, he dug ditches for a
dollar a day during the worst of the depression and joined the Civilian Conservation
Corps when all work dried up in Indiana. He moved to New Lebanon, Ohio and sold milk
door to door, first from a horse drawn wagon, then in one of the first milk trucks owned
by the Blossom Hill Dairy in New Lebanon. He moved back to Indianapolis, Indiana and
sold bread for Colonial Bakery to groceries and restaurants. He worked for a period
as a door to door laundry / dry cleaner route man for Lux Laundry, he later became
route supervisor for them before leaving to sell tools to garages and filling station
mechanics for Snap-On Tools. In each of his endeavors he worked his way from the
bottom to positions of middle management. He was up for promotion to District Sales
Manager with the tool company until they discovered that he had only a sixth grade
education. When they refused to promote him for that reason he quit and started his
own company. He said many times, that it was the best thing that ever happened to him.
He enjoyed a great success with White's Tool Company and achieved more personal success
and realized more financial comfort than he ever thought possible. Maryann NOBLITT and

His mother Maryann (nee NOBLITT) tells that when she felt the labor pains and knew the
birth was near, she sent Betty, Jerry's sister, next door to tell the neighbor to; 1)
Call the doctor and tell him "It's time" and he better hurry; 2) Call Jerry's father
at work, tell him "It's time to take her to the hospital" and tell him to hurry; and
3) Bring the neighbor back to be with her until help arrived and she better hurry.
Everyone was on their way but Jerry got there first. When he was 8 years old in
1944 his Uncle Andy came to visit in his Navy uniform and told of the big ships and
vast oceans, Jerry was hooked and said from that time that he would join the Navy and
learn a trade just like his Uncle Andy. He joined the Navy after graduating from High
School and served from 1955 to 1958 aboard the heavy cruiser USS Salem CA139. He was
trained in electronics in the Navy and used that to his advantage throughout his life.
He worked for AT&T for almost 30 years in electronics testing and repair, supervision
and about half of that career was spent in direct customer sales. He retired from
AT&T in 1987. He tried full time retirement but was bored and went to work for Mead Data
Central (Lexis/Nexis) as a systems analyst for 5 years before retiring from there in 1994.
He again tried full retirement but was bored and went to work in 1995 for the
Bellefontaine Examiner Newspaper as an Advertising Executive and retired from there
in December of 1998. This time the retirement appears to be final. Jerry is a 32
Degree Scottish Rite Mason and an active member of the Bellefontaine Knights Templar,
York Rite Masonic Order.
He was married to Carol Louise GRASTON (daughter of Al GRASTON and Virginia Nel FREELAND)
on November 19, 1960 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Carol Louise GRASTON was born on December
23, 1938 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Jerry LeRoy WHITE and Carol Louise GRASTON had the
